I’ve recently left school

I have just completed my GSCE’s and not sure what I would like to do. I don’t want to keep studying everyday but may have to choose a course and stay on at college. I would really like to work and don’t mind studying part time.

You have the choice of staying on at college and doing a vocational course to build your work experience or applying for a care job or apprenticeship straight away. You may also qualify for an apprenticeship programme within the health sector but please note that this is a full time commitment. With any apprenticeship you will earn a salary, receive training, learn job- specific skills and gain recognisable qualifications. You will be required to work full time and study at the same time, so you need to be sure that this is something you really want.

Many employers will want you to have some work experience already so apprenticeships are often a great way of learning whilst working. Because you have just left school. You’ll have to show potential employers that you are serious about learning and developing your knowledge and skills. They can then arrange for you to do the necessary training.

If you are unsure of what you would like to do in the future it may be a good option to stay at the college and look for work experience or volunteering within different settings to find out if working in the sector suits your future career aspirations.
